Hi all -

the project ideas page for our mentoring organization application is
up at the following URL:

http://hackathon.nescent.org/Phyloinformatics_Summer_of_Code_2008

This now needs to be fleshed out with project ideas.

There is a link at the top of the page to last year's project ideas
(make sure you scroll down to the *Ideas* section; the accepted
projects part was added only later) so you get an idea for how these
might look like. Bottom line, succinctly state the problem that the
idea is addressing, be specific in approaches etc where needed or
useful (e.g., where that is clear already, or where there are too
many possibilities otherwise), be sure to provide pointers to more
information and background (URLs to software, citations/DOIs of
method or background papers, etc).

The project ideas should be in pretty good shape by Tuesday night
(3/11) at the latest, so I suggest that we aim for Monday night
(3/10) for an initial draft. They do not need to be in perfect shape
until we are accepted. Also, until the time students start applying,
the primary and secondary mentors do not need to be fully nailed down
yet, though there should be candidate names for both.

If you have multiple project ideas, try to focus on one unless you
can drum up enough mentors for each. It is OK to be a secondary (but
not primary) mentor for another project idea than you anticipate to
be primary mentor for, or for multiple project ideas.

If you are listed as a primary mentor, please also email me your
Google ID, as I will need to provide those in the application. Yes, I
should still have that if you were a mentor last year.

In order to edit the page you will need to create yourself an account
on the wiki if you don't have one yet (but almost all of you do
already). To prevent clashes from concurrent editing I recommend that
you follow these steps:

- click on the '[edit]' link to the left of the 'Ideas' heading
- copy the project idea template and paste it underneath, change the
idea title to yours (can be a working title), *leave the rest as is*
- save

This can be done relatively quickly, and hence has little chance to
directly co-incide with someone doing the same thing. Afterwards you
can click on the '[edit]' *to the left of the heading you just
created* and fill in the details for your project idea; this will
only pull up your particular section into the editor and hence avoid
the risk of multiple people editing the same section of text.

You may also choose to just email me the template text with the
details filled in for your project idea, and I'll put it in for you
(you can still edit it afterwards).

Finally, those of you who aren't yet subscribed to the wg-
phyloinformatics at nescent.org list, I'd encourage you to do so at your
earliest convenience, as then I don't run the risk of forgetting to
include you in Summer of Code-related communication. The URL for
subscribing is:

https://lists.nescent.org/mailman/listinfo/wg-phyloinformatics

Lastly, I'm available any time if you want to bounce off ideas or if
you want me to weigh in on prioritizing one idea versus another or
just for any other question you might have.

I apologize for not getting this out sooner, but hopefully you've all
been cooking up some ideas already over the past week and a half.

The ideas I've seen being rumored about so far are all pretty cool,
so I'm looking forward to pulling together again a strong application!
