Could also be due to the conflict markers that you get when local and  
svn repository versions of the code don't match, stuff like the  
following get inserted into the code to indicate the conflict:
"<<<<<<< .mine"
">>>>>>> .r142"
which would explain why the error comes up after people are running  
svn update and goes away when you install a fresh copy of the code?
