I would start by reading the README here (or on any other CRAN mirror)

  http://cran.rstudio.com/bin/linux/ubuntu/

and then upgrade to R 3.2.3.  After everything is peachy.  We, and CRAN,
release for current R.  We even test for it on Travis.  If you're on an older
system you are by yourself.  So I'd upgrade.
