A follow-up: It appears that PGF 2.10 introduced a bug into the Postscript
rendering pipeline that messes with the Preview package---which the
tikzDevice uses to produce standAlone figures. As Yap appears to be capable
of interpreting `dvips` specials, this bug could be causing the crash you
are getting.
