  I was "just" going to see if I could remove the explicit ape
dependency before submitting a new version, but I found out to my dismay
that it's a little more complicated than that ... I am working through
removing the dependencies where possible and otherwise making them more
explicit.  Turns out the conflict with ape's "edges" function is also
worse than I thought.
