Dear all,
On May 25th there will be an NBIC workshop on "software licensing and
valorization" as part of the BioAssist meetings
(http://www.nbic.nl/about-nbic/events/all-events/detail/article/bioassist-programmers-meeting/).
I have been asked to give a two-slide presentation in the afternoon
session discussing our choice of license and putting down some questions
for the discussion afterwards. Questions about governance are of
particular interest.
In the past issues of governance and type of license were discussed on
this list (e.g. mails starting 18-10-2011 (Apache license) and
20-10-2011 (GenABEL governance: inclusion of new packages)). Also
interesting are these posts (by Yurii)) on our website:
- http://www.genabel.org/The_GenABEL_projects_governance
If you have any suggestions for topics or questions I should address
(either in my brief talk or during the discussions) I'd like to hear
from you. Some of the things that I'd like to discuss are:
- Projects joining the GenABEL project: what license should/can the have?
- At the moment the copyright to the GenABEL code lies with the
individual contributors (and/or their employers). Do we want to assign
the copyright to a separate entity (a GenABEL foundation or an external
foundation)? This would make re-licensing or dual-licensing much easier,
but might also deter people from contributing.
- Is dual-licensing an option and what does that require?
Of course, if you are in the neighbourhood you are welcome to join the
workshop (see the URL at the top of this mail for a registration link).
Best regards,
Lennart.
