Even though it doesn't take much time I think we should do this early
because it will help with the link stuff further down the road. This way
any errors in the links (e.g. those with absolute paths like
http://test.genabel.org/etc) will show up early and allow us more time
for fixing.

It really is "the old way" of doing it and it may incur search engine
penalties. Check the "HTML Redirection" section at the top of on Steven
Hargrove's web site for some arguments against it.
However, it will work as expected.
