.bashrc is only there for people using bash, so those using csh, tcsh,
zsh, etc. are missing out. The question is, of course, doest this matter
with Bash being the most commonly used shell. Those running other shells
usually now they do.
You could write in the instructions to modify .bashrc and point out that
it depends on the shell they use. You could even go as fas as let them
run ps -p $$ which will list the name of the shell and decide on that,
but that seems a bit too much.

Exactly!
By the way, that must be quite an old Red Hat server, right? As far as I
know RHEL5.x uses .bashrc and I thought RHEL4.x also did.

As pointed out in the link, most .bashrc's source the .bash_profile
file, so I guess we should stick with .bashrc.
