I uninstalled Java 1.6, update 29, in the control panel, and then 
installed JDK 6, update 27 from here:
http://www.oracle.com/technetwork/java/javasebusiness/downloads/java-archive-downloads-javase6-419409.html#jdk-6u27-oth-JPR

Stat-ET is up and running again.
