Indeed. According to "Package subdirectories" in Writing R Extensions (
http://cran.r-project.org/doc/manuals/R-exts.html#Package-subdirectories)
the only supported extensions are .c, .cc, .cpp, .f, .f90, .f95, .m, and
.mm.
